Trouble is built on excellent services and open-source software. Where attribution is required next to content (maps, photos), it also appears directly beside that content.

Maps and places

• Google Maps Platform — place links, coordinates and the "Open in Google Maps" buttons throughout trips, and the interactive trip maps on this website (shared trips, My trips and the example trips), drawn by the Google Maps JavaScript API. Google’s attribution and terms appear on the map itself.
• Google Places — the place details saved in trips (names and addresses), and in the app the photos of places without an openly licensed one, on cards and in a place’s details. Content from Google Places is marked Google Maps where it is shown, and Google’s photos and reviews name their authors. This website shows no Google photos: a place without an openly licensed photo shows its words or a placeholder.
• Wikimedia Commons and Openverse — the openly licensed photos of places, areas and cities on cards in the app and on trip pages here, found by the place’s name. Each shows its author and licence beside it, and says when it was cropped to fit. Trouble is made using Openverse but is not endorsed or certified by Openverse.
• OpenStreetMap and OpenFreeMap — the map on a Big Trip’s family page, drawn by OpenFreeMap from OpenMapTiles vector tiles, with English place names. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
• OpenStreetMap Nominatim — outlines of countries, regions and cities on maps in the app, credited “© OpenStreetMap” on the map. Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
• Leaflet — the open-source map rendering library behind that map.

• Natural Earth (public domain), via the world-atlas package — country shapes and the land map on the globe, in the app and on this website, and the land on the homepage’s route maps.
• U.S. Census Bureau state boundaries (public domain), via the us-atlas package — US states on the globe.
• OurAirports (public domain) — airports used to suggest car-rental pick-up points.

Photo attribution

Photos on this website are openly licensed photos (from Wikimedia Commons and, on trip pages, Openverse), credited in a small badge on each photo with their author and licence (this page does not replace those per-photo credits), and the photos travellers add to their own posts and profiles. They remain the property of their photographers.
